EFIMED at the EUROMED Forum

On November 5th, the European Institute for the Mediterranean (IEMed) organised the EUROMED Forum in Barcelona. The aim was to define potential projects under the different thematic areas that the Union for the Mediterranean will address in the coming years.

EFIMED was invited to contribute to the Water Sector working group in order to provide the point of view of water and natural ecosystems interactions as well as the need to develop integrated approaches to manage all natural resources.

World Forestry Congress

EFIMED participated in the WFC by emphasising the specificity and challenges related to the sustainability of Mediterranean forests. EFIMED especially contributed to the Water and Forests Sessions, as well as during the side event devoted to Arid Zone forests.

Forest Technology Platform Conference

Dr. Marc Palahi, EFIMED Head of Office, participated at the Conference of the Forest Technology Platform in Stockholm (Sweden) on 9-10 November. During this conference the results from different researchs dealing with the priority areas of the European Strategic Research Agenda were presented and the transfer of this results into innovations in companies were discussed.

Mediterranean forest genetic resources and climate change

FAO/Silva Mediterranea and CIHEAM, with the collaboration fo EFIMED, have organised a workshop in Chania (Greece) on 24-26 November 2009 with experts in Mediterranean forest genetics and climate change.

New Advisory Group members

Following the EFIMED Advisory Group Terms of Reference, in November 2009 three members should step down and three new experts have taken their duties.  

EFIMED thanks the help received from Dr. Felipe Bravo (Spain), Dr. Zuheir Shater (Syria) and Dr. Hamed Daly Hassem (Tunisia) during these first years and is pleased to inform their replacement by Prof. Jerry Vanclay (Australia), Prof. Margaret Shannon (USA) and Dr. Santiago Gonzalez-Martinez (Spain).

Collaborations

In the framework of the REINFORCE Project, EFIATLANTIC - Atlantic Regional Office of the European Forest Institute - is searching contact persons working on forest genetics in: Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, Italy and Turkey.
