Will Storm Damage to European Forests Continue to Increase?

What can policy and forest management do to mitigate storm damage and help to restore damaged forests? Are the policies that are currently in place effective? Researchers, policy makers, and stakeholders from across Europe discussed whether the current systems are adequate at both national and European level in a workshop in early July in Brussels on ‘Policies for Forest Storm Damages Mitigation and Restoration‘.

Peter Mayer new Director of BFW
Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Peter Mayer has been appointed Director of the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW), Austria. He will start in his new post on 1 August. Peter Mayer has been the Executive Director of IUFRO since 2003. More information

Metsähallitus and Ponsse Grants 2010 awarded
The Board of the Foundation for European Forest Research has awarded the Metsähallitus Grant 2010 to Mr. Rubén Valbuena for his doctoral studies within the field of Forest Mensuration specialising in an Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) technology and its applications for obtaining Pan-European indicators of structural forest diversity. The Ponsse Grant 2010 has been awarded by the Foundation’s Board to Mr. Hou Zhengyang for his PhD study focusing on the ALS data-based harvesting planning in the context of precision forestry. The Foundation and EFI congratulate the new grant holders and wishes them the best success in their PhD studies and a warm welcome to EFI!

NEWFOREX: Challenges of implementing the valuation of forest externalities
Can we contribute to the increase of societies' welfare by developing new ways to enhance the provision of such forest goods and services? This and similar questions are the focus of the NEWFOREX project (New Ways to Value and Market Forest Externalities). In their second project meeting in Barcelona, NEWFOREX partners discussed the progress on the preparation of background information for the development of valuation questionnaires. These will be applied for the valuation of main forest externalities in selected case study areas.
