Towards Integrated Fire Management
For many years, fire has been high on Europe's political agenda as well as visible in the public debate and the media. The paradox of fire arises from the controlled use of fire in everyday life and the threats it poses to lives and property in the form of uncontrolled wildfires. Integrated fire management offers a conceptual framework that helps to reduce damage and maximise the benefits of fire. There are now two EFI publications that offer insight to the issue.

Two Research Grants by the Foundation for European Forest Research
The Foundation for European Forest Research is offering two PhD scholarships up to 19000 euros per annum with a travel allowance of 1000 euros a year. The opportunities are open to all interested persons qualified to proceed with PhD studies at an internationally recognised university.

Eduardo Rojas-Briales Forestry Director for FAO
Prof. Dr Eduardo Rojas-Briales has been chosen Assistant Director-General and Head for Forestry Department of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO Forestry Department helps nations manage their forests in a sustainable way. The office of the Assistant Director-General is located in Rome, Italy, at the FAO’s head office.

Joining forces for renewable energy, bio-based products and sustainable construction in Europe
Europe’s research driven clusters in sustainable forest management and wood based industries will get new co-operation opportunities within the ROKFOR project which started last week. This cooperative action project ‘Sustainable Forest Management Providing Renewable Energy, Sustainable Construction and Bio-based Products’ (ROKFOR) will join forces in five European regions in order to create both individual and regional research agendas and action plans in the fields of renewable energy, bio-based products and sustainable construction.

AGORA builds capacities in forestry in Morocco and Tunisia
AGORA project brings together scientists and policy-makers to build new forest research capacities in Tunisia and Morocco based on effective transfer of scientific knowledge from Portugal, Italy, Spain, France and Turkey. As a result, forestry and forest research in Tunisia and Morocco will be reinforced, becoming more ready to face the challenges stemming from the climate change, population growth and loss of forest land in the non-European Mediterranean countries.
